Egg: A Taster of Vegetarian Life in Liverpool!

Yes I'm back and still excited about food!

This blog has been on hiatus since my exams in January, as has (for the most part) my social life! Now that my undergraduate degree has basically finished I am free to write and party!
The interior of Egg: the view downstairs from the balcony.

As I munch on my 70% dark chocolate Green and Black's bar (nothing beats Green and Black's!) I am writing about the much loved vegan and veggie cafe on Newington Street (just off Bold Street) in Liverpool.

I am a through and through omnivore, not because I dislike vegetarian food but because I love food so much that I am willing to eat and try anything! A good friend of mine guiltily admits that she feels vegetarian dishes are always missing something (i.e. meat - especially bacon) but even she loves this place! Yesterday was my first visit to The Egg and I cannot believe what I have been missing out on!

Mixed berry smoothie with a spicy bean burger.
Cheap and cheerful doesn't quite justify this cafe. The interior is charming and cute, whilst the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious (a quality many Liverpool eateries possess). It is extremely good value for money with lunches for around £5 but the portion size is absolutely huge! Despite being tempted by the Tandoori mushrooms, I ordered a spicy bean burger which comes with salads (pasta, green leaf and beany quinoa) and pitta bread. Veggie burgers are one of my favourite things (I order them at Wetherspoons with extra bacon...) and this one did not disappoint. I didn't think it was very spicy, but it was definitely flavoursome and I enjoyed it! The only downside was the fact the portion was so big I couldn't finish it!

I would really recommend the mixed berry smoothie which comes in a huge glass, (you can see it dwarfing my lunch in the above image) you just get so much smoothie for £3!

The problem with vegetarian cuisine is that many people who are not veggies are frightened off by the thought of weird food or the assumption that the cafes will be full of pretentious vegetarians, but veggies are nice people (honestly!) and their food might not contain any meat (but there is protein in beans and pulses) but it's tasty. The Egg is a great way to ease yourself in to vegetarian food if you're in the Liverpool area, if you haven't been yet, you definitely need to get over there!
